Church Youth

Here at the Temple we have a wide range of young people who visit our church for various things. We have BB and GB Brigades, a Sunday school, a marching band and various other church related activities for young people to take part in!

Thinking of coming along? Don’t worry! We are all very welcoming at the Temple and we will strive to involve you in anything that you wish to take part in, be it the Brigades or other church activities.

From this page you will be able to see some of the different activities available for young people in the Temple URC.

Junior Church

Here at the Temple, we take young people seriously – we pride ourselves on our active young people and leaders. This is because, not only are young people the church of the future, they are the church of today, too!

Our young people leave the main Sunday service around a third of the way through to take part in a separate ‘Junior Church’ – an opportunity for 3-18 year olds to learn more about God in a smaller and more “hands-on” environment. Junior Church aims to challenge young people on various concepts from the Bible and real world applications of faith, but in a fun way! (Honest!)

We try to help foster new friendships, social skills, individual understanding of faith and many other excting things!

In other words.. If you’re young person who wants to have fun and learn more about God..

COME ALONG TO JUNIOR CHURCH!

Butterflies

Parent, Toddler and Baby Group

Butterflies is a parent/carer, baby and toddler group that meets on Monday and Wednesday mornings between 9.30am and 11.30am, during term time.

Children from birth until they leave to join Reception Year benefit from: free play, messy play, imaginative play, active play, creative play, music sessions and a soft, safe area designated for our babies.

Parents and carers enjoy making new friends and supporting each other through sharing experiences and life skills.

Our volunteers are always on hand to make sure sessions run smoothly and everyone (even the grown-ups!) enjoys refreshments during our 10:30 snack time.

SSYE

The Southern Synod Youth Executive (SSYE) is a group of young people from different parts of Southern Synod that come together to give young people in the URC a voice in decision making. SSYE also plans and organises events for young people across the synod.

SSYE meets 3-4 times a year for weekend meetings where they discuss the latest issues and decisions in the URC church. Some of the members also sit on the Synod Children & Youth Work committee and some attend their Synod Area meetings to speak about youth matters. Mixed in with the serious stuff, there’s a lot of fun and opportunity to meet new people.

Every other year some members of the Synod Youth Exec will represent Southern Synod’s young people at the URC General Assembly.

If you would like to find out more about SSYE, please feel free to visit our blog: http://southernsye.wordpress.com/

If you are a young person, or if there are young people at your church, who would like to speak to us to find out more about what SSYE do and/or getting involved in the group and events, you can get in touch by social media or contact the Southern Synod CYDO:

The Temple URC’s BB & GB marching band is famous nationally as one of the best brigade bands in the UK, regularly winning national titles and making appearances in various high profile events. The Pacemakers currently competes in the Boys’/Girls’ Brigade and Drum Corps United Kingdom (DCUK) marching band circuits. In 2015, the band were crowned both National Boys’ Brigade Champions and DCUK A Class Champions for the first time in the band’s history.

Are you aged 11-18? Do you want to learn how to play an instrument and develop life skills? Do you want to develop new friendships and connections? Then why not get in touch about joining?

The band is very welcoming and is always recruiting! With three sections to join (Brass, Percussion and Colourgaurd/Dancers) there’s plenty of opportunities to participate in the band – no previous musical tuition or knowledge is needed as full training and equipment will be provided.

What do they do in the church

Both companies hold monthly church parades; where members come to church in uniform to share in fun, fellowship and their love for God.

They also collaborate on a joint annual Display in the spring; where all members from each company, youngest to oldest showcase things they do during the year at their brigade evening!

The Junior Sections of each brigade also come together in a week’s where they play various sports, have lots of fun and generally become closer friends!

The older sections of the brigades (Year 7-13) enjoy a week of camping on the Isle of Wight under 8 man canvas tents; they take part in various sports, games, activities and worship!
